The Big Family Cooking Showdown Season 1 Episode 2 Episode 2
- August 22, 2017
In Episode 2 of The Big Family Cooking Showdown Season 1, we are treated to another exciting hour of culinary competition. The show is hosted by Zoe Ball and Nadiya Hussain, who introduce the competing families and judges for the episode.
The first round is the Cook 3 Ways challenge, where the families must prepare three different dishes using the same ingredient, which in this episode is lamb. The judges,Rosemary Shrager and Giorgio Locatelli, will taste each dish and decide which family will advance to the next round while the other family will be at risk of elimination.
The families are completely unconventional in this episode with contrasting techniques and styles. Elena and Ryan's family focuses on traditional cooking, while the other family, a team of three sisters, utilize their Filipino roots and present their version of traditional Filipino dishes.
The first dish presented is Elena and Ryan's lamb curry. They used a range of traditional ingredients, including Garam masala, fresh mint, cilantro, and coconut for a comforting curry that would be perfect for warming up on a cold day. The second dish is one-pot wonder lamb, where the lamb is cooked with potatoes, carrots, and leeks. With only one pot, this is a perfect dish for a quick midweek dinner. The third and final dish is lamb kofta kebabs served with a tomato and cucumber salad. The dishes were plated well and tasted good.
Next up is the three sisters who first present their homemade Hopia with lamb filling which is their signature dish and create three different dishes based on this hopia. They make hopia lamb fajitas, lamb briyani, and lamb and sweet potato mash. The judges were impressed with the sisters' cooking style, incorporating their Filipino heritage in their dishes.
After a tense deliberation by the judges, they finally decide which family will be moving on to the next round. Although both families did well, the judges prefer the experimental style of the three sisters, and they were selected as the winners of the round.
Moving on to the next round, the families must cook a signature dish that showcases their family's expertise in the kitchen. The judges will once again taste each dish and select which dish is the best.
For the signature dish round, Elena and Ryan's family presented their "winning lasagne" packed full of traditional Italian ingredients, including homemade ragu sauce, garlic, and mozzarella cheese. The second dish was a shrimp and mushroom risotto, cooked to a creamy consistency, and served with a sprinkling of fresh parsley on top. The final dish is a traditional pudding, sticky toffee pudding, made with dates.
The three sisters presented their savory pancit dish, a traditional Filipino dish, which is made with noodles, shrimp, chicken, carrots, and cabbage. The second dish is a riff on carbonara, using spaghetti as the pasta base, but with a more creamy and buttery sauce than a typical carbonara. The final dish that they present is apple pie bars, which they cook to perfection.
The judges are once again impressed with the dishes, and the decision between the two families is a hard one to make. However, ultimately, the judges agreed that Elena and Ryan's family had made the better dishes, and they are declared the winners of the signature dish round.
In conclusion, Episode 2 of The Big Family Cooking Showdown is filled with excitement, tension, and mouth-watering food. The contrasting styles and techniques of the two families add an exciting twist, and the passion and love for food exhibited by both sets of contestants is inspiring. The judges do an excellent job of critiquing each dish and providing meaningful feedback while always keeping the atmosphere friendly and upbeat. Overall, this episode is an excellent continuation of what is quickly becoming an addictively entertaining cooking show.
