Ep 3. The Boys of Fall

Ashton Kutcher returns to TV in the new sitcom The Ranch, now streaming on Netflix. The multi-camera sitcom follows Colt Bennett (Kutcher), a semi-pro football player who returns to his rural Colorado hometown to help his family run their struggling ranch. Big laughs and familiar faces abound in the first season, and fans of The Ranch are sure to love episode 3, titled "The Boys of Fall."

In this episode, Colt and his younger brother, Rooster (Danny Masterson), relive their glory days playing high school football when they attend their alma mater's homecoming game. Though it's been over a decade since they last suited up, the Bennett boys are just as passionate about the game as they were in their teenage years. Their nostalgia is somewhat tempered by the fact that their former coach, Mr. Peterson (Kurtwood Smith), is now too old and feeble to continue leading the team. Instead, a young upstart named Hank (David DeLuise) has taken over as head coach, and he and Colt immediately butt heads over the team's strategy.

Complicating matters further is the fact that Colt's old girlfriend, Heather (Kelli Goss), is now a cheerleader for the team. Though Colt and Heather had a volatile relationship in the past, there are still feelings there, and Colt can't help but be distracted by her presence on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Rooster has his own romantic problems to deal with when he runs into his ex-girlfriend, Mary (Megyn Price), at the game. Mary has moved on to a new man, but Rooster can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy as he watches her from the stands.

The episode is full of hilarious moments, from Rooster's attempts to impress Mary with his minor league baseball career to Mr. Peterson's bumbling attempts to coach the team from the sidelines. But there are also some genuinely poignant moments, particularly in the scenes between Colt and Heather. Despite the fact that they've both moved on with other people, there is a real chemistry between them, and it's clear that they still care for each other deeply.

Fans of Ashton Kutcher's previous sitcom, That 70s Show, will appreciate the callback to his earlier role as Kelso, as well as the presence of Kurtwood Smith as the former coach. But even those who are unfamiliar with these actors will find plenty to love in The Boys of Fall.
