Shlomo Chaim lives in Kfar Habad, a village near Tel Aviv, in Israel. The members of his family are practicing Jews, which means they follow all the Commandments of the Bible, including those concerning food. Shlomo Chaim's family eats kosher; in other words, they are not allowed to eat dairy products at the same time as meat and can never eat pork.

Muhammad is 12 years of age. He lives in Jerusalem, one of the oldest cities in the world. As he loves cooking, Muhammad decides to organize a huge feast for his friends (under his mother's watchful eye!). In preparation for the meal, the boy goes to the suq, a big traditional Arab market.

Ayguerim is 11 years old. She lives in Almaty, Kazakhstan's biggest city. This is an important day for her because she is to prepare a big banquet, with her mother and aunt. She starts off with a nourishing breakfast then takes a nice walk to the market to fetch the necessary ingredients. Ayguerim's mother teaches her how to taste and select the best products.

Rosario is 11 years of age. She lives in Argentina, a large country in South America. It is her birthday today. After eating a hearty breakfast consisting of stuffed croissants, rye cakes and other mouthwatering delicacies, Rosario goes off to the market with his mother.
