In Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 1 episode 7, titled "Kimmy Goes to a Party!", Kimmy decides to attend a party with her boss Jacqueline, only to discover that she's been brought there to be a titillating novelty item for the wealthy guests. Meanwhile, Jacqueline's husband Julian has a big announcement to make.
As the episode begins, Jacqueline invites Kimmy to a party at her house, promising her a night of "fancy people rubbing elbows". Kimmy is excited about the idea of attending a party, but is confused when Jacqueline won't tell her anything about it. When they arrive, Kimmy realizes that the party is filled with wealthy socialites who are more interested in gawking at her than actually interacting with her.
It quickly becomes clear that Jacqueline has brought Kimmy to the party as a novelty item, introducing her to guests as her "Mole Woman" and describing her time underground in graphic detail. Kimmy is understandably upset and hurt by this, feeling like she's being objectified and treated like a sideshow attraction.
At the same time, Jacqueline's husband Julian has a big announcement to make: he's running for office. Julian is a clueless, egotistical man who seems to have no idea what his wife's actual job even is, but he's confident that he can charm his way into the public's heart. He spends the party glad-handing guests and making empty promises, all while completely ignoring his wife's objections and concerns.
As the night goes on, Kimmy grows increasingly uncomfortable with the way she's being treated. She tries to confront Jacqueline about it, but Jacqueline brushes off her concerns and continues to introduce her to guests as her "cute little underground friend". Kimmy eventually reaches her breaking point and storms out of the party, feeling like she's been used and objectified in a way that she never could have imagined.
Despite the uncomfortable subject matter, "Kimmy Goes to a Party!" is a standout episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It highlights both the ways in which people can be cruel and insensitive without realizing it, as well as the strength and resilience of survivors like Kimmy. It's a powerful episode that manages to be both funny and heartwarming, and it sets the stage for the rest of the season's exploration of trauma, recovery, and personal growth.
