"Broad City" is based on a previous web series. Jacobsen plays fictional Abbi Adams while Glazer plays a fictional Ilana Wexler. Buress is Lincoln and Gethard is Derek. Each sketch features recurring characters and themes related to female empowerment in comic settings. The series has 10 episodes in season one and 10 episodes on tap for season two
Jacobsen and Glazer are stoner heroines who address marijuana use, feminism, and other popular culture issues. They graduated to the show after years of improv work with the Upright Citizen's Brigade sketch comedy troupe.
The show relies on physical humor to make points about modern life. Quirky subjects of their humor include art galleries, drug purchases, and poor-paying jobs. Each sketch provides small pieces in a larger concept of female empowerment in a humorous way. They also feature a lot of humor related to living in New York City.
