Kimmy Schmidt, the titular character of the show, takes on a new challenge in the eighth episode of the third season titled 'Kimmy Does a Puzzle!'. After the events of the previous episode, in which she realized that her relationship with Perry wasn't what she thought it was, Kimmy is determined to distract herself from the heartbreak by keeping herself busy. This time around, she decides to tackle a massive puzzle that her former step-father, the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, left behind.
The episode opens with Kimmy returning to the house where she grew up and where the Reverend kept her and her fellow 'mole women' captive for 15 years. Despite her traumatic past, Kimmy seems to be taking the whole puzzle thing fairly well, until she discovers that the puzzle is actually a map that might lead to a hidden treasure. Determined to follow the clues and track down the treasure, Kimmy enlists the help of her friends Titus and Lillian.
Meanwhile, Jacqueline is dealing with her own romantic troubles. After being dumped by Russ, Jacqueline decides to focus her energy on her own business ventures. However, when she has a chance run-in with Russ and his new girlfriend, Jacqueline's jealousy gets the best of her and she decides to win him back. Her attempts, of course, backfire spectacularly and lead to some hilarious and cringe-worthy moments.
Back at the puzzle, Kimmy, Titus, and Lillian are struggling to put all the pieces together. The map leads them to a frat house, where they try to blend in and infiltrate to get more information. They also make an unlikely ally in the form of a quirky police officer, who takes them under her wing and helps them navigate the more dangerous aspects of their treasure hunt. With her help, they eventually make it to the final location of the treasure.
However, the end of the treasure hunt doesn't bring the resolution Kimmy was hoping for. Instead of finding a pot of gold or a priceless artifact, they find something much more personal. It's something that helps Kimmy come to terms with her traumatic past and gives her the closure she didn't even know she needed.
As usual, 'Kimmy Does a Puzzle!' is full of the show's trademark humor and heart. The treasure hunt plotline is a fun departure from the usual zany antics of the characters. Kimmy's past trauma is handled sensitively and with care, and the episode ultimately delivers a satisfying emotional payoff for both Kimmy and the audience. Meanwhile, Jacqueline's storyline provides some much-needed comic relief and a reminder that, despite her wealthy lifestyle, she's still just as human and flawed as everyone else.
All in all, 'Kimmy Does a Puzzle!' is a standout episode of the third season. It delivers on both the comedic and emotional fronts, all while staying true to the show's unique brand of humor and heart.
