We Are Lady Parts is a British television show about a Muslim group of women who form a punk band. In season 1’s episode 1, “Play Something,” we are introduced to the all-female punk band Lady Parts. We first witness Amina, a young microbiology PhD student, scouting for a new housemate in her London flat. Her ad attracts two vastly different women: the pious and softly spoken Bisma and loud, chain-smoking Saira, who wants to live closer to her job at a corner shop.
Soon into the episode, Amina finds herself collaborating with Lady Parts after her cousin sends her there to discover her passion. Lead by lead guitarist, Saira (who is an absolute riot), Lady Parts consists of Ayesha, the drummer; Momtaz, the bassist; and Humayma, who sings and writes the most outrageously hilarious lyrics to the band's songs.
The episode is interspersed with humor and warmth as well as some great underlying messages about the struggles and stereotypes Muslim women face in the Western world. It highlights their fight to have a voice and their struggle to break free from the traditional stereotypes by playing punk music.
Each of the members of Lady Parts has a unique personality that makes the show a joy to watch. Saira, for one, is an absolute star, and one can't get enough of her. Her sarcasm & swear words remind us of the daily challenges Muslim women face, and how their seemingly simple desires can come across as rebellious to the community. For instance, as a young Muslim woman, Saira (like many Muslim women) struggles to convince her family to let her lead an independent life. Her family also wants her to marry, and she finds that their constant overbearingness is suffocating.
In another example, Momtaz faces her mother's disapproval about her choice to join a punk band. Momtaz’s mother would rather have her daughter marry and focus on her studies.
One of the best things about We Are Lady Parts is how it balances the lightheartedness of the band with the grittier realities of the struggles they face. The second episode attempts to go much deeper into their hindrances and obstacles on the road to success.
In conclusion, the first episode of We Are Lady Parts is a perfect beginning to a show that highlights the struggles Muslim women face, predominantly in western society. Pregnant with laughter and warmth, it offers a promising glimpse of what is yet to come. Noteworthy is its ability to explore sensitive topics and stereotypes with tact and humor, making it a show that is sure to be enjoyed by a broad range of audiences.
