Secret Confessions is a South Korean thriller directed by Kim Tae-hyeong and released in 2021. Starring Jang Sung-won and Oh In-hye, this movie tells the story of an adulterous love affair and the consequences that the lovers face. The film starts with Ah-yeon (Oh In-hye), a married woman in her thirties, who meets a young man named Yeong-joo (Jang Sung-won) in a bar. Ah-yeon starts a physical relationship with Yeong-joo, and they carry on with their affair. Yeong-joo's intentions are not entirely romantic, however, as he is trying to collect information about Ah-yeon's husband for a documentary that he is making.

It is evident from the beginning that Ah-yeon is unhappy in her marriage. Her husband is often away from home, and when he is home, he is usually preoccupied with work. Ah-yeon feels lonely and neglected and finds solace in Yeong-joo's arms. Meanwhile, Yeong-joo is drawn to Ah-yeon's wealth and her lifestyle, which he wants to document for his film.

As their relationship progresses, Yeong-joo becomes increasingly possessive and controlling, which starts to affect Ah-yeon's personal and professional life. She starts to receive anonymous threats and feels that someone is following her. Her husband also becomes suspicious of her behavior, and she starts to feel the pressure mounting from all sides.

As the plot develops, the movie takes on more of a mystery thriller tone. The audience begins to question Yeong-joo's intentions and his connection to the anonymous threats. The movie keeps the audience on edge and engaged with its twists and turns.

One of the key strengths of the Secret Confessions is its nuanced portrayal of its characters. Ah-yeon is not just a victim but is also complicit in the affair, while Yeong-joo's motivations are not clear until the very end. Their relationship is complex, with a mix of emotions, desires, and ulterior motives. The writing and the performances of the leads delve deep into the emotions of the characters and create a compelling narrative.

The direction and cinematography of the movie are excellent, with shadowy and gloomy visuals that create an ominous mood. The camera work is subtle and understated, adding to the overall mood of the film. The lighting adds to the atmosphere, with shots that alternate between light and dark, depending on the scene.

The music in the movie adds to the tension and helps set the mood. The score is understated and adds to the sense of unease that is prevalent throughout the movie.

The movie's pacing is also commendable, with the movie keeping the audience on tenterhooks throughout. Even the quieter moments in the movie have an underlying tension that is prevalent throughout the film.

Overall, Secret Confessions is a well-crafted thriller that keeps you engaged throughout. Its nuanced portrayal of its characters and well-crafted storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of the genre.
