In the small town of Millbrook, Indiana miles away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, life is rather easy going and uneventful, but all that's about to change. Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen)is the father of two children, Jack and Sarah. Together with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) they run a local restaurant and seem to be your typical mid American family. Stall has assumed the role of mild-mannered businessman, living out the dream in smallville USA. Life seems to be taking its ordinary course in Millbrook, that is until the night two men make the grave mistake of attempting to rob Stall's restaurant . In a sudden act of heroism, Stall disarms one of the criminals and takes justice into his own hands by decimating the two would be thieves, taking their lives blink of an eye. After such a heroic act, all eyes are now on focused on Millbrook. Our small town entrepreneur Tom Stall becomes an instant celebrity. But,Tom seems a tad bit apprehensive about his new found fame and does his best to avoid the lime light with minimal success. His stardom attracts an unusually cryptic visitor named Carl Fogarty(Ed Harris)to Millbrook. With his dark demeanor and repulsive scarred appearance, Fogarty begins his quest to unravel the truth about Indiana's superman Tom Stall. Fogarty pays a visit to the Stall's diner claiming that Tom Stall is not who he says. He refers to Tom as Joey Cuszack, a former Philadelphia crime figure with blood ties to the Irish mob. Now Tom Stall must act fast to calm the storm that's upon him, while protecting his family from a violent past and embarking on a monumental metamorphosis of the human psyche. Receiving academy award nominations for Best supporting actor (William Hurt), and best adapted screenplay (Josh Olson), A History of Violence has enjoyed international success earning over 60 million dollars worldwide at the box office, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture in 2006.
