Anna Khitrova works as a hospital midwife, discovering a Russian diary on the body of a teen girl, Tatiana, who died in childbirth. She also discovers a card from the Trans-Siberian, a restaurant owned by Semyon, a "thief-in-law" of the Russian Mafia. Anna decides to track down Tatiana's family so the child will have a home. Anna's mother doesn't deter her, but Stepan, Anna's Ukrainian uncle and an ex-KGB officer, cautions Anna while he assists her in translating the diary. Anna eventually learns of Semyon as well as that his unstable son Kirill severely mistreated and abused Tatiana. Anna concludes that the baby girl was sired by Semyon. Semyon's driver, Nikolai, also serves as a "cleaner," dumping the bodies of the murdered into the Thames. Semyon, panicked at the idea of prosecution, tasks Nikolai with giving Anna the location of Tatiana's family if Anna returns the diary. Nikolai reclaims the diary but refuses to give the location, begging Anna to keep the baby within the UK because Tatiana's home is a bad place to grow up. Semyon distrusts Stepan for enough reasons to place a hit on him. Nikolai accepts the offer, with Stepan suddenly missing. As Nikolai's status rises within the Russian mafia, Semyon sponsors him into full status after saving Kirill from an unapproved hit. Semyon schemes to have Nikolai to take Kirill's place during a meeting with Azim, the Kurd who helped instigate Kirill's hit. Semyon and Azim meet at a Turkish bath house when the Chechens attack in retribution, mistaking Nikolai for Kirill. Nikolai kills them both, winding up in the hospital with severe wounds. In the hospital, Nikolai is outed as an FSB agent who infiltrated the gang under the British Government. Because of his cover, Nikolai read Tatiana's diary before Semyon destroyed it and planned to have Semyon arrested for statutory rape, with a DNA test proving his paternity to Tatiana's child. Stepan is held in protection within a 5-star Scotch hotel. Semyon orders his son to kidnap and murder Tatiana's baby. Kirill almost goes through with throwing her into the river, but Nikolai and Anna convince him to return her. Nikolai and Kirill hug as Nikolai explains that Semyon is over, passing the position of boss to them. Nikolai and Anna part romantically with Nikolai rising as boss and Anna gaining custody of "Christine."
