The Wolf Hour is a dramatic thriller set in the summer of 1977 in the South Bronx, New York. The movie is directed by Alistair Banks Griffin and stars Naomi Watts as June Leigh, a former counterculture icon who is now living as a recluse in her apartment, known as the “safe house”. Jennifer Ehle and Emory Cohen play the roles of Margot and Freddie respectively, two visitors who arrive at her apartment and trigger her paranoia.

June lives alone in her apartment, which has become her sanctuary from a world that she believes is cruel and unsafe. She never leaves the apartment and spends most of her time either sleeping or writing in her small notebook. Her only contact with the outside world is through the radio, which constantly broadcasts news about the Son of Sam killer who is on a killing spree in the nearby streets.

As the movie progresses, the audience is made aware of June’s past and how she used to be a famous activist advocating for social justice causes in the 60s and 70s. Her experience with the police and government brutality has left a lasting impact on her, leading her to live in fear of the outside world.

The first disruption to her solitary life comes in the form of a power outage that plunges her apartment into darkness. As she struggles to find her way around, she hears strange noises and becomes aware that she is not alone in her apartment. The tension in the movie builds as she tries to find the source of the sounds and comes face to face with a prowler. The prowler is easily scared off with a kitchen knife, but June is left shaken and even more paranoid about the outside world.

The next day, June’s apartment buzzer rings, and she hesitantly answers it. She is surprised to find out that it is Margot, a friend from her past who has come to visit her. Margot is excited to see her and tries to persuade June to leave her apartment and come outside, but June refuses. Margot is patient with her and slowly starts to build a relationship with her.

The next day, Margot leaves June a copy of her manuscript, which June reads in her solitude. The manuscript is about a woman who is trapped in a building and fears for her life. The story bears a close similarity to her own situation, and she feels like Margot is trying to threaten her. Her isolation and paranoia grow until she starts hearing Margot’s voice in the apartment, even though she is not present.

Throughout the movie, the Son of Sam murders are ongoing, providing a tense background for the plot’s action. June becomes more and more consumed by the murders and the fear of the outside world. She regains contact with the outside world when Freddie arrives to fix her phone line, and she becomes even more paranoid, believing that he is part of a larger conspiracy against her.

The climax of the movie is when June finally confronts her fears and faces the outside world. The action is thrilling and fast-paced, and the audience is left wondering whether June’s fears were unfounded or whether her paranoia saved her from danger.

Overall, The Wolf Hour is a powerful drama that explores the themes of isolation, fear, and paranoia. Naomi Watts delivers a powerful performance as June Leigh, capturing the depth and complexity of her character. The movie keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, as they try to piece together the mystery of June’s paranoia and her past. The film’s intense psychological drama is masterfully brought to life by Alistair Banks Griffin’s direction and the performances of the entire cast.

The Wolf Hour is a 2019 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 39 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.9 and a MetaScore of 42.
