The Painted Veil is a 2006 film that stars Naomi Watts, Edward Norton and Liev Schreiber. Naomi Watts portrays a woman named Kitty who marries a doctor named Walter, who is portrayed by Edward Norton. Walter studies bacteria. Kitty is full of herself and only marries Walter because she does not like her mother and wants to move away. Walter has to go to Shanghai to study infectious diseases, so he brings his wife with him. He prefers to be at home or in the lab, while she lives for the night life and partying. Kitty and Walter’s marriage is quickly on the rocks, and she begins an affair with a man named Charles, who is married as well. Walter finds out that his wife has been unfaithful and becomes very angry. He gives her an ultimatum: either he divorces her and cites adultery, or she goes to a remote place in China to help treat a cholera outbreak. Kitty decides to get divorced and asks Charles to leave his wife and marry her, but he refuses. Kitty faces being alone, so she decides to head to China. Kitty has to live in squalor and is by herself for most of the day. One day, Kitty visits an orphanage and decides to work there as a volunteer. The nuns who run the orphanage place her in the music room, where she thrives. Kitty is able to shed her selfish ways and just focus on the kids. She and Walter begin to bond and decide to reconcile. She discovers that she is pregnant and does not know who her baby’s father is. Walter agrees to love the baby but comes down with cholera after helping the town fix its water supply. Kitty takes care of him, but he dies. Years later, she is seen walking with her young son, who is named Walter.
