A Night in Old Mexico is a 2013 American drama movie directed by Emilio Aragón and starring Robert Duvall, Jeremy Irvine, and Angie Cepeda. The film tells the story of a grumpy man named Red (Duvall) who, after losing his ranch to the bank, decides to take a road trip to Mexico with his grandson Gally (Irvine). The movie starts with Red receiving an eviction notice from the bank. As a cowboy in his early 70s, Red refuses to allow the bank to take his beloved ranch away. He decides to spend his last night in the ranch house with his dog, crossing his arms, and waiting for something to happen.

The next morning, Gally shows up at Red’s doorstep, with whom he has never met. His mother decides that Red’s the only family he’s ever going to have since she’s going to prison for drug possession. She drops him off and disappears from his life. Red, at first, doesn’t seem interested in Gally, but seeing the little boy’s innocence and curiosity slowly brightens up Red’s otherwise gloomy disposition.

After a night of drinking, Red wakes up to find his horse and truck missing, realizing that Gally took the vehicle to the border. After a search, he eventually finds Gally at a bar in Mexico. Gally introduces Red to Patty (Cepeda), a singer in a bar, and her boss. Red, being a ladies’ man, fondly takes an interest in Patty, eventually joining her on stage for a song and dance.

The trio embarks on a journey across Mexico, trying to make some money along the way. The amount they make isn’t much, but they meet a variety of people, each with their own unique story, that changes their lives in small ways. Red’s and Gally’s relationship also grows over time, with Red becoming the father figure to his grandson.

As they travel, the soon to be ex-western landowner discovers a free-spirited side within him. He shows off his horse-riding skills to some youngsters who mock him for being old. He beats them in a game of chicken, and when they try to get revenge, he stuns them by brandishing a shotgun. Red even ends up freeing a fighting chicken that he purchased, commenting on his own character growth to Gally.

As Red and Gally make their way down to Mexico, they eventually run into problems with the local cartel. The cartel wants the horse back in exchange for the money they owe them. Things escalate, and it appears the two of them may not make it back home alive. Nonetheless, they manage to escape with the help of some friends they met along the way.

Throughout A Night in Old Mexico, we see a relationship between a grandfather and grandson build as they experience the ups and downs that comes with family, making their last memories together some of the best.

In conclusion, A Night in Old Mexico is an uplifting and heart-warming movie that explores themes of family, redemption, and self-discovery. It’s a wonderful portrayal of the realities of life and the pain we feel when we lose someone or something we love. The film is a must-watch for anyone looking to take a break from the monotony of life and enjoy themselves with a good story.
