In Lonesome Dove, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones play retired Texas Rangers and friends, Gus and Call, who operate a livery in a small, nearly forgotten town. One is a womanizer, the other a workaholic. Between the two, and their former colleague Joshua (Danny Glover), they become embroiled in a fast paced cattle drive while avoiding bandits with old grudges against them. Directed by Simon Wincer and produced by Suzanne De Pass, this western television miniseries co-stars Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, and Anjelica Huston. Jake Spoon (Robert Urich) arrives in Lonesome Dove after accidentally shooting an Arkansas mayor during a bar fight. Jake is all talk about Montana and ranching life. Call is so caught up in the romance of the idea, he proposes collecting a herd with the intent of driving them to Montana and selling them at market. Gus, his brother in nearly every sense, reluctantly agrees to accompany him. Meanwhile, the Arkansas mayor's brother-in-law, Sheriff July Johnson (Cooper) begins tracking Spoon. Gus and Call, with Newt Dobbs (Schroder), Joshua, and their Mexican cook, embark on their journey. Their first line of business is to steal 2,500 horses and cattle. Along the way, they lose their cook and decide to replace him, encountering Lorie (Lane) while en route to San Antonio. They also run into Blue Duck, a bandit who sorely loathes Gus and Call. With Call minding the herd elsewhere, Blue Duck seizes the upper hand; he abducts Lorie after subduing Newt. Gus gives chase. Newt offers Lorie as payment to wayward Comancheros whom he charges to kill Gus upon sight. When Gus catches up to them, a shootout ensues, though no side triumphs. Sheriff Johnson comes on the scene, helping Gus to beat back the bandits. He successfully helps Gus recover Lorie, though loses his crew in the process. Gus and Lorie rejoin Call and the herd, and the trio continue endeavoring to reach Montana.
