In Johannesburg during the 1960s, Apartheid was occurring, and it was not safe on either side. Molly Roth, only thirteen years old, is the daughter of black parents who live in a white neighborhood. This was never a problem before, but with the blacks demanding equality, the schism becomes worse. Before Apartheid, Molly had white friends, but that is no longer acceptable. What were simply normal friendships with other black families begin to take on significance as they fight together towards freedom.
