Aguirre, the Wrath of God is a 1972 West German film directed by Werner Herzog. It stars Klaus Kinski as Lope de Aguirre, a 16th century Spanish conquistador in search of El Dorado’s gold. Aguirre rebels against his commanding officer in the Andes Mountains and sets off with a number of soldiers on an expedition for treasure that ends in disillusion and madness. The film is remarkable for its hallucinatory imagery and inspired acting and directing. It has also gained notoriety for the contentious relationship between director and star, who went on to collaborate on a number of films.
