It's the summer of 1965, and four teenage girls living in Vancouver, Canada are spending their time hanging out at the beach, going to parties, and dating American boys who are stationed nearby. American Boyfriends follows the lives of these girls as they navigate their way through the ups and downs of adolescent romance, friendship, and self-discovery.

Margaret Langrick plays Sandy, a high school student who is introduced to the world of American boys by her best friend, Jill. While Sandy is shy and reserved, Jill is outgoing and adventurous, and the two girls complement each other well. Jill is dating Frankie, a handsome sailor from California who seems to be the epitome of cool. Meanwhile, Sandy is smitten with a boy named Bobby, who is a bit of a bad boy with a troubled past. As the girls and their boyfriends spend more time together, they all begin to learn more about themselves and each other.

The film portrays the burgeoning sexual revolution of the time, as the girls begin to experiment with their own desires and the boys they are dating. Yet at the same time, it's also a coming of age story about four young people who are beginning to figure out who they are and what they want out of life. And while their American boyfriends may seem glamorous and exciting, the film ultimately suggests that true happiness can only come from within.

While American Boyfriends depicts a relatively carefree and innocent time, it also touches on some heavier themes. There are scenes that deal with drug use, unwanted pregnancy, and the cultural divide between the Canadian and American characters. However, the film handles these topics with sensitivity, and ultimately emphasizes the importance of love, friendship, and understanding in overcoming these challenges.

One of the film's greatest strengths is its ensemble cast. Both the Canadian and American actors give strong performances, and the dynamics between the four main characters feel natural and believable. Margaret Langrick, in particular, stands out as Sandy. She brings a quiet strength and vulnerability to the role, and her journey of self-discovery is both relatable and moving.

American Boyfriends is also notable for its soundtrack, which features popular songs from the 1960s such as "A Teenager in Love" by Dion and the Belmonts and "She's About a Mover" by Sir Douglas Quintet. The music adds to the film's nostalgic and romantic atmosphere, transporting the viewer back to a time when life was simpler and love was all that mattered.

Overall, American Boyfriends is a charming and heartfelt coming of age story that will appeal to anyone who has experienced the joys and pains of teenage romance. It's a film about the power of friendship, the importance of staying true to oneself, and the transformative nature of love. And while its setting may be specific to a certain time and place, its themes and messages are universal and timeless.
