From the director/writer Mark Herman, this movie takes place in an English coal-mining town facing major changes and challenges. The question of whether or not the coal operation will continue is threatening the livelihood of many. Amidst turmoil and difficult decisions for the community, the one thing that holds the town together is the brass band that has been a sort of mascot for the town for a hundred years.

British humor and wit is intermingled with this drama piece, including a bit of romance on the side. The cast includes a young Ewan McGregor, Tara Fitzgerald and Pete Postlethwaite. Postlethwaite plays the part of the brass band director whose life revolves around the music he and the others produce. He is working to prepare the band to play in a competition, whilst their focus seems to shift to the future of the mine. When new flugelhorn player Gloria (Fitzgerald) arrives on the scene, the band is suddenly encouraged to press forward. The problem is, she may not be on their side at all. As peoples’ very lives begin to crumble, no one knows if the band will go on or if life as they know it is about to change forever.
