Amy Medford is a young woman in the early 1900s who is fed up with her loveless marriage to a rich man named Elliot, particularly after the death of their son, who was deaf. Because of her own experiences with hearing impairment, she seeks a job at a school for the deaf and blind, and she tries a personal approach. While she lacks conventional training and her methods are frowned upon by the administration, she begins to see some real results, especially with the young boy Henry. At the same time, a local doctor takes a romantic interest in her.
