The story follows Anna Karenina, the elegant young wife of wealthy nobleman, Alexei Karenin. He is twenty years older and Anna is very unhappy. She stays with him for the sake of caring for Seriozha, their son.

At a ball in Moscow, she meets and is attracted to Count Alexei Vronsky, who is also immediately smitten with her. He follows Anna to St. Petersburg and shamelessly pursues her. Anna eventually surrenders to her feelings, becoming his mistress. They are quite happy up until the time that she has a miscarriage. Anna has a child with Vronsky, but he is disturbed at not having a real marriage since she is unable to get a divorce. Anna believes that Vronsky will leave her for a younger woman. She then commits suicide, jumping in front of the train.

Vronsky is devastated by the death of Anna. He volunteers to participate in the Balkan war. While on his way there, he comes upon Konstantin Levin, who married Princess "Kitty" Shcherbatsky, his former love.

Levin then tries to persuade Vronsky not to join the war. However, he is haunted by Anna's death. Levin returns to his family, writing about these events and signs the manuscript as Leo Tolstoy.
