Another Earth directed by Mike Cahill is a drama film with a twist of science fiction. This movie features Brit Marling as Rhoda Williams, a 17-year-old genius about to go to MIT who has a love of the stars. After a night of drinking Rhoda makes a fatal choice to drive herself home. She hears on the radio that a second Earth has been discovered while on her drive and while staring towards the sky she hits another car. The accident puts the other cars driver, John Burroughs, into a coma and kills his wife, son and unborn child. Rhoda lives in isolation and works as a janitor at her old high school after serving a 4 year prison sentence. One day Rhoda decides she needs to apologize to the man whose life she destroyed. She loses her courage when John answers the door, and instead makes the excuse that she is a maid. After cleaning his house, John invites her to go again the following week. Rhoda continues to go to Johns house and does not come clean about who she is. The two develop a friendship and eventually become involved romantically. A contest is set up in which the winner will be able to go on the first civilian flight to the second, "mirror" earth. Rhoda enters and wins. Elated, she shares the news with John but he does not want her to go. Rhoda confesses she is the one who killed his family and at that point John forces her out of his house. Rhoda is informed that the people of mirror Earth are identical to those on Earth, up until the night of the accident, the night Earth found out about mirror Earth. Rhoda knows there is a chance that her mirror self did not kill Johns family in the other Earth. She leaves a note for John explaining this and gives him her ticket and John accepts.
