This 2002 novel based romantic drama film was directed by Dai Sijie and focuses on the universal problems of youth, cultural revolution and loss as much as romance. The film was shot in France and China, primarily in Mandarin and features a running time of 111 minutes. The backdrop for the tale is set in 1970s during the explosive Chinese Cultural Revolution which shook up the country with violence and dangerous new ideas. Two boys are taken to the mountains far beyond their bourgeois home for, "re-education," (ie. Chairman Mao's rigid, cultural brainwashing). While there they struggle with the iron fist principles of the communist villagers as well as vy for the heart of a charming, young seamstress from a nearby town.
