The movie tells the story of Kenai, a young Inuit boy living in North America around 10,000 years ago. Kenai is eager to become a man and win the approval of his tribe, especially his brother Sitka who he admires. In his quest for manhood, Kenai goes on a hunting trip with his brothers, Sitka and Denahi, in the hope of catching a bear. During the hunt, Sitka is killed by the bear, and Kenai is overcome with grief and anger.

Filled with rage, Kenai vows to seek revenge on the bear that killed his brother, and he attacks it. But in the midst of the attack, the spirits intervene, transforming Kenai into a bear, and thus beginning his journey of self-discovery and redemption.

As a bear, Kenai encounters a young bear cub, Koda, and they become unlikely friends. Together, they embark on a long journey to discover the truth about bears, the importance of brotherhood, and most importantly, themselves.
