Bulbbul is a supernatural thriller movie that premiered on Netflix in 2020. The story is set in a village in Bengal in the late 19th century, during the British Raj. The movie is directed by Anvita Dutt and produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma. The movie revolves around Bulbbul, who is a young girl when the story begins. She is the younger sister-in-law of Indranil Thakur, who is three times her age. Indranil is the zamindar of the village and has three brothers, Mahendra, Biswanath, and Satya. Mahendra, who is the eldest, marries Bulbbul, but it's not a happy marriage. Mahendra is in love with his childhood sweetheart, Binodini, who is also the Thakurs' maid. The Thakurs are very powerful in the village, and nobody dares to question them.

Bulbbul and Binodini become close friends, but their friendship is short-lived. Binodini is caught having an affair with Mahendra, and she is banished from the Thakur household. After that, strange things start happening in the village. Children are disappearing, and people are being killed. There are rumors that a chudail, a demon woman, is responsible for these crimes.

Years go by, and Bulbbul is now a beautiful, intelligent, and independent woman. Her husband, Mahendra, has died under mysterious circumstances, and she is now in charge of the Thakur household. Satya, her brother-in-law, returns to the village after years of being away, and he starts investigating the crimes that have been happening in the village. He becomes convinced that Bulbbul is the chudail who is responsible for these crimes.

However, the truth is far more complicated than that. As Satya delves deeper into the mystery, he realizes that nothing is what it seems. There are secrets and lies that have been buried for years, and the truth is more horrifying than anybody could have imagined.

One of the things that make this movie stand out is its unique take on the chudail myth. In Indian folklore, the chudail is a demon woman who preys on children and men. However, in Bulbbul, the chudail is a symbol of the oppression that women faced in the past. It's a metaphor for the way women were treated as second-class citizens, and how they were punished for daring to have their own desires.

The movie is beautifully shot, and the cinematography captures the lushness and beauty of the Bengal countryside. The performances are also exceptional, particularly Triptii Dimri, who plays Bulbbul. She is mesmerizing on screen and does an excellent job of conveying the complex emotions of her character.

Overall, Bulbbul is a compelling and haunting movie that will stay with you long after it's over. It's a powerful commentary on gender and power dynamics, and it's a movie that will make you think and reflect on the injustices of the past. If you're a fan of horror movies, mythological stories, or feminist narratives, you won't want to miss this one.

Bulbbul is a 2020 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5.
