The Haunting is psychological horror film based on the haunting of Hill House. Dr. Marrow (Liam Neeson) under the guise of an insomnia study, gathers three people to study the effects of fear on a person. His purpose is to see how much fear a person can take before having a break down. Eleanor "Nell" Vance (Lili Taylor), Luke Sanderson (Owen Wilson), and Theodora (Catherine Zeta-Jones) are his unknowingly participants. Every night the caretakers of the property lock the gates so nothing can get in or out. At first, everything is going well, Dr. Marrow tells the participants the story behind Hill House. It belonged to Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning) who had built it for his wife in hopes of having a big family one day. Every child that his wife gave birth to died, taking away that dream of having a family. His first wife died and no one sees Crain again. Once the story is finished, frightening things began to happen. One of Dr. Marrow's assistants is whipped by a wire in the face, Nell begins to see ghosts and finds out that Crain was not just a recluse, but in his twisted mind begins to take and kill children to build his "family". The spirits are now trapped and are using Nell to help them be free from Crain's spirit. With all the terrifying events happening, everyone is wanting to leave. Luke becomes angry and disfigures a picture of Crain only to be beheaded by the spirit. Nell cannot leave until all the children's spirits are free. In the process, she is dragged by Crain as he is heading to Hell, but the good spirits save her body. She dies in the process, but is lifted into Heaven for saving the children. The only ones left at the gate is Theodora and Dr. Marrow, but they are too stunned from what they have witnessed and went through to speak to the caretakers.
