Carny, released in 2009, is a gritty drama following the life of a traveling carnival worker, Jack (played by Lou Diamond Phillips). Jack works with a group of carny performers, trying to survive in an industry that is slowly dying out. He’s been working in the carnival business for years and has become a veteran in the game.

Despite the carnival scene being one of danger, competition, and greed, Jack is still able to find some semblance of family within his community. He's a respected member of the group, and the show's ringmaster (played by Vlasta Vrana) trusts him as his right-hand man. Jack’s work requires him to be on the road and constantly on the move, but he's able to form lasting bonds with the other workers.

Jack's world is forever changed when another veteran carny, who is also a drug runner, dies suddenly. In an effort to keep the drug trade going, Jack’s counterpart in the carnival, Harvey (played by A.C. Peterson), takes over the business. With no regard for the consequences, Harvey becomes increasingly violent and unpredictable, putting Jack and the entire carnival community in danger.

As Harvey’s reckless behavior increases, Jack becomes increasingly desperate to stop him. In a world where the carnival is the only thing the workers have, he’ll stop at nothing to protect it.

The movie is full of suspense, danger, and nail-biting tension. Lou Diamond Phillips gives a solid performance portraying the conflicted protagonist, and the supporting cast is equally impressive. Vlasta Vrana is particularly noteworthy in her role as the ringmaster, seamlessly conveying the inner-workings of the carnival industry and the difficult balance between personal and professional relationships.

Throughout the movie, we see the darker side of the carnival industry, with the characters constantly exposed to drugs, addiction, and violence. The script is raw and realistic, never shying away from the harsh realities of the carnival business, but also highlighting the companionship and camaraderie forged between its workers.

In addition to Phillips and Vrana, the movie boasts an impressive supporting cast, including A.C. Peterson as the volatile drug dealer Harvey, which adds to the film’s explosive energy. The casting choices are spot-on, and the performances are nuanced and multifaceted.

The film offers a realistic portrait of life as a carnival worker and the unshakable bonds that develop between people thrown into close quarters for an extended period of time. It is a story of community and sacrifice, where individuals often put their personal safety and well-being on the line for the greater good of their group.

Overall, Carny is a must-watch for those who enjoy gritty, realistic character-driven dramas, and for those who are curious about the dark underbelly of the carnival business. The film provides an excellent exploration of the moral complexities within the industry and the struggles its workers must face every day.
