Supergirl is a spin-off of the hugely popular Superman franchise released in the 1980s starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel; Helen Slater, in her first major film role plays Supergirl in a production overseen by Superman producer Alexander Salkind. Despite a large number of famous Hollywood actors appearing the movie is considered to have failed at the box office, but has achieved cult status among science fiction fans. Directed by Frenchman Jeannot Szuare, who later directed Santa Claus: The Movie, the characters were created for D.C. Comics by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. The film opens with a group of people from Superman's home planet Krypton living on a distant planet in a settlement known as Argo City. Kara Zor El, who later becomes Supergirl and her uncle Zaltar, played by acting legend Peter O'Toole examine a mysterious power source for their city known as the Omegahedron; an accident sees the power source blasted into space leaving Argo City in darkness. Attempting to save her family and fellow people of Krypton Kara follows the Omegahedron through space to its landing site on Earth. Before Kara is able to find the Omegahedron a would be witch, Selena finds it and takes it to her hideout in an abandoned carnival. Kara decides to stay on Earth and find the Omeghedron, enrolling in an all girls school as Linda lee, cousin of Clark Kent. During her stay at school Linda transforms into Supergirl, but hides her identity behind the persona of the bookish Linda Lee. Selena and Supergirl battle over the Omegahedron and their love for Ethan, a school groundskeeper; during a fight Supergirl is banished to the Phantom Zone used in there Superman movies. Finding Zoltar in the Phantom Zone he sacrifices his own life to return Supergirl to Earth and rescue there Omegahedron; the 124 minute film ends in a final battle between Selena and Supergirl. Despite being advertised in press releases an appearance by Superman did not happen in the movie, instead the character of Jimmy Olsen crossed over to the Supergirl movie. British comedian Peter Cook plays Selena's comic love interest, Norman.
