“Cheatin’ Hearts” is a dramatic film about a broken family that stars Sally Kirkland, James, Brolin, Renee Estevez, Pamela Gidley, and Kris Kristofferson. The film has the feel of a western movie and is set in New Mexico. The film was written and directed by Rod McCall. Kirkland plays Jenny Stevenson, a mother of two daughters, who is married to Henry Stevenson, played by James Brolin. When he cheats on her with a sultry stockbroker, she goes about her life of raising her daughters while resenting his abandonment of the family. Things really get out of control when Henry returns unannounced and uninvited for the wedding of his daughter, Kat, played by Renee Estevez. Jenny’s reception is less than welcoming as she greets him with a hard slap to the face. Kat welcomes Henry back to be able to walk her down the aisle.
Pamela Gidley portrays Jenny’s other daughter, Samantha, and she is much less forgiving of Henry. She returns home from studying music at Julliard in New York City. She has other things on her mind as she returns home after an absence and has to face her childhood sweetheart that she left behind. Her stern reception of Henry puts her in opposition of Kat.
Despite all of the hate that Jenny has for Henry, she still secretly carries a torch for him. She fights her emotions and grits her teeth through arguments and battles with Henry and Kat. Henry’s return has turned everything about their normal lives upside down. She struggles with the fact that she is in her mid-forties and divorced with seemingly little sympathy from anyone. She finds a shining light in a kindly cowboy named Tom, played by Kris Kristofferson, who shows Jenny that she deserves to be treated nicely. Jenny has to take a look at her life and find out what she really wants and needs.
