In this Italian drama film set in 1938 Rome, Umberto and Leone, fabric linen dealers who have men's costume shops on the same street, battle against each other for customers. Leone is continuously coming out on top, until Anti-Semitic politics result in the approval of Racial Laws. Leone, who is Jewish, suddenly finds his shop being rigidly controlled by the unjust laws. Umberto finds these laws wrong and unfair, and with the rise of Fascism and the war looming ahead, these two men may just finally leave their differences behind them.
