Greta Garbo stars in this true story of a Polish countess who sacrifices everything to save her country from the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte--even to the point of offering herself as an object for the emperor's Conquest. When Countess Marie Walewska (Garbo--Ninotchka, Anna Christie) attracts the eye of Napoleon Bonaparte (Charles Boyer--Gaslight), her government implores her to sacrifice her marriage and her chastity to save Poland from the French invaders. In Paris, Walewska falls in love with Bonaparte, but when he decides to marry a Hapsburg princess to secure legitimacy to his domination of Austria, Walewska leaves without telling him that she is pregnant with his child.
