Set in the pre-war era of Europe, The Constant Nymph is a poignant and emotionally charged drama that revolves around a young, vivacious and incredibly talented musician, Tessa Collinge (Joan Fontaine), who falls deeply in love with a much older, highly respected composer, Lewis Dodd (Charles Boyer). The movie explores the complexities, social norms and prejudices of the time, as well as the consequences of the intense and forbidden affair between the two.

The film depicts Tessa as an innocent and precocious 14-year-old who lives with her eccentric and unconventional family in their rambling estate in the Austrian Alps. Her father, a world-renowned composer, has remarried a much younger woman (Brenda Marshall), who is hardworking and responsible but lacks any kind of maternal warmth toward Tessa, creating a tension-filled home life for her.

Into their lives enters Lewis Dodd, a celebrated composer who is visiting to study the music of Tessa's father. Lewis is immediately taken aback by Tessa's youthful charm and her prodigious talent for music. However, because of the vast age difference between them, he initially views their relationship as nothing more than admiration and a natural affinity for music.

The movie works as a slow burn, as the affection and admiration between Lewis and Tessa eventually turns into something deeper and more meaningful. Unable to resist their mutual attraction, they begin a secret and ultimately tragic affair that threatens to destroy Tessa's family as well as Lewis's careers. Together, they become inseparable and consummately in love, but their passion is tempered by the societal norms of the time, as well as the unyielding pressure of Lewis's career.

As the story progresses, we see Tessa as not just an innocent and naive young girl, but a fully formed young woman who is wise beyond her years, possessed with sensitivity, intelligence, and an innate understanding of the human heart. Her character is brought to life by Joan Fontaine, who delivers a remarkable performance, capturing Tessa's vulnerability, her passion for music, and her fierce devotion to Lewis.

Charles Boyer, who plays Lewis Dodd, is also mesmerizing in his portrayal of the intensely passionate and conflicted composer. He captures the sense of detachment and aloofness that Lewis brings to his relationships, but also the deeper layers of his soul that he reveals only to Tessa. The chemistry between Boyer and Fontaine is palpable, making their love story all the more heart-wrenching.

As the plot moves forward, we witness the consequences of their love, as they are eventually found out and forced to confront the harsh realities of their situation. What follows is a tragic chain of events that tests their love to the limit, and threatens to destroy everything they hold dear.

Overall, The Constant Nymph is a beautifully crafted and deeply moving film, with outstanding performances from the lead cast. The movie is a poignant exploration of love, passion, and sacrifice, set against the backdrop of pre-war Europe. Through its subtle nuances and deliciously romantic plot, it leaves the audience with a sense of profound sadness, longing, and a bittersweet appreciation of the fine line between love and obsession, as well as the devastating consequences of loving without compromise.

The Constant Nymph is a 1943 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 52 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7.
