Ekanta Apan is a Bengali drama film directed by Biresh Chatterjee and released in 1987. The movie depicts the life of a retired professor, Amol Roy (played by Victor Banerjee), who after living a fulfilling life full of accomplishments, is now lonely and feels disconnected from his family. His grown up son and daughter-in-law live abroad and pay little attention to him while his daughter is occupied with her own life. Amol now spends most of his time in introspection and reminiscing about the past.

The story is set in Kolkata, where Amol lives alone in his grand old mansion. He has a caretaker, Hari (played by Soumitra Banerjee), who is the only person Amol talks to on a daily basis. Hari is a simple man, who has little education but a lot of wisdom. His simplicity and his ability to understand and connect with Amol at an emotional level makes him the perfect companion for Amol who feels ignored and left out by his own family.

The plot of the movie takes a turn when Amrit, his son, and daughter-in-law return from abroad. Amol is initially excited about their arrival, but soon realizes that their visit is more of a formality than anything else. Amol's wife has passed away and he tells his son about his own illness, hoping that his son would stay back and comfort him in his difficult times. However, Amrit has little interest in staying back and instead wants to take his father abroad for treatment. Amol, however, is not interested in leaving his house or his country and asks Amrit to let him die peacefully in his own home. Amrit fails to understand his father's wishes and a clash between the two leads to Amol cutting all ties with his son.

The story progresses as Amol starts spending more and more time with Hari. He takes long walks with him, visits temples and spends time talking to him about anything and everything. Hari becomes a confidant of sorts for Amol, giving him advice and sharing his own experiences.

The movie explores themes of loneliness, family values, and the importance of relationships. It portrays how relationships are more important than anything else in life and how they can help us overcome our deepest fears and anxieties. It also shows how family, which is considered the backbone of a society, can sometimes fail to understand the needs of its own members.

The performances of both Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Banerjee are exemplary. They bring the characters of Amol and Hari to life, making them seem real and believable. The cinematography is also noteworthy, with the camera work capturing the essence of Kolkata, its people and its culture.

Overall, Ekanta Apan is a touching movie that depicts the complexities of life and relationships. It raises important questions about the meaning of familial ties and the role of personal relationships in overcoming emotional pain. The movie is a must-watch for anyone looking for an emotional and thought-provoking cinema experience.
