Enga Mama is a 1970 Tamil language film directed by A. C. Tirulokchandar and starring the legendary Shivaji Ganesan in the lead role. The film is an emotional drama that explores the complex relationship between a mother and her son, and the various challenges they face in their lives. The story revolves around Kathir Velan (Shivaji Ganesan), a wealthy businessman who is known for his kind-hearted nature and charitable works. He is deeply devoted to his mother, Rajeswari (Venniradai Nirmala), and seeks her blessings before embarking on any new venture. However, their close bond is tested when Kathir Velan decides to marry his girlfriend Geetha (Devika), against his mother's wishes.

Rajeswari is a traditionalist and believes that a wife should be chosen from the same community and caste as her son. She disapproves of Geetha, who is from a different caste and has a modern outlook on life. Despite her objections, Kathir Velan marries Geetha and moves away from his mother's home. Rajeswari is heartbroken by her son's decision and refuses to accept Geetha as her daughter-in-law.

As time passes, Kathir Velan and Geetha lead a happy life and have children. However, Rajeswari's resentment towards Geetha only grows, and she makes no effort to reconcile with her daughter-in-law. This leads to a series of misunderstandings and conflicts between the family members, which threaten to tear them apart.

The film is known for its powerful performances, especially by Shivaji Ganesan and Venniradai Nirmala, who beautifully portray the strained relationship between mother and son. Shivaji Ganesan brings out the emotional complexity of his character, torn between his love for his mother and his duty towards his wife and children. Venniradai Nirmala, on the other hand, gives a nuanced portrayal of a mother who is too rigid in her beliefs and cannot accept change.

The film also features K. Balaji in a supporting role, as the villainous brother-in-law of Kathir Velan, who tries to manipulate the family for his own gains. The music by M.S. Viswanathan is another highlight of the film, with memorable songs like "Ammamma" and "Unnai Thedi Vandhen."

Overall, Enga Mama is a poignant film that explores themes of family, tradition, and sacrifice. It portrays the universal struggle between generations, as old beliefs clash with new perspectives. Despite being made over five decades ago, the film remains relevant today and continues to be remembered as one of Shivaji Ganesan's finest performances.
