Loosely based on the novel My Friend Flicka, Flicka offers the classic story between human and creature, to be more specific, girl and horse. When Katy has to go home to the family horse ranch after a not so great semester at boarding school to tell her father Rob, played by country music super star Tim McGraw, she has to find a way to prove that school is not cut out for her but running the ranch is. That is if her father decides to keep it. But her father has other ideas for Katy. She is to go back to school and her brother Howard is to take over the families Wyoming horse ranch. But Howard knows it’s not him meant to run the ranch but Katy. As soon as he works up the nerve he’s telling Rob he’s going back to college. The ranch is in danger of going bankrupt with high veterinarian bills and a decreased market for well trained and bred quarter horses the family is in running out of options, sell the land or the make money from the wild mustangs that run free on the land. Most particularly the wild mare Katy found in the woods after running from a wild mountain cat who Katy has named Flicka, or pretty young girl. When Katy is caught training the horse Rob does what any over protection father would do, called the buyer for the rodeo and sold Katy’s Flicka. Now Katy has to get Flicka back no matter what her father says. So when Flicka ends up in the wild horse race Katy convinces her brother Howard to help her enter the dangerous race and when Flicka back. After Katy mounts Flicka she doesn’t stop there and instead rides off into the country side. A storm blows in and Katy is wet and cold by the time they reach the creek on the family ranch just to run into the mountain lion. Rob and Katy’s relationship is finally fixed after Katy recovers from her storm induced fever and learns that her father did not put down Flicka as he ordered when she was found mauled by the lion and Katy clinging to her for dear life.
