The movie Gabriela takes place in the 1920's in the small Brazilian town of Parati during a drought. The heroin is introduced into the movie after she wanders into the town with a group of relatives in search of water. Nacib, the owner of Vesuvio Bar decides to hire Gabriela as the cook for his establishment after a chance meeting. The story revolves around the complicated and passionate relationship between Gabriela and Nacib.

Based on a novel by Jorge Armando: Gabriela: Clove and Cinnamon, the film concentrates on the conflict between Gabriela and Nacib as their relationship evolves. Even though Gabriela was originally hired as a cook, Nacib decides to make Gabriela his wife after noticing the amount of attention she receives from the local men. Gabriela at heart is a sensual and fun loving country girl, but Nacib desires to make a more respectable arrangement of their union. The differences between their desires is where everything begins to unravel.

Originally attracted to Gabriela’s sensuality, Nacib desires to make a more presentable woman of Gabriela. As a foreigner, Nacib also wants to gain approval within the town and believes this can be accomplished through his marriage to Gabriela. Even though he enjoys her sensuality, he finds that her behavior and lack of culture embarrassing. He commands her to dress in a more conservative fashion and to behave more modestly. However, Gabriela rebels against these requests and eventually strays and cheats on Nacib. The challenges throughout their marriage leads to Nacib removing Gabriela from his home.

Intertwined throughout the film is the political atmosphere between the men and women within the town. During this period the old ways are giving way to more modern relationships even though the men are obsessed with retaining the dominant role. The power struggle between women and men is an underlying theme throughout the movie. However, the sensuality of the film and the relationship between the main characters is the main focus.
