Get the Gringo is a fast paced crime drama about an American born thief who is thrown into a Mexican prison where he learns to endure life with the help of a nine year old boy. Driver, a run way criminal, leads a high speed chase across the Mexican border. His pursuers, organized crime bosses, chase Driver in an attempt to recover two million dollars stolen cash Driver nabbed from their coffers. When a speeding Driver crashes his get away car, the automobile flips, landing across the Mexican border. Curious Federales police arrive at the scene, discover the stolen cash in the trunk of the car, and apprehend Driver taking him into custody. Intending on keeping the money for themselves, the Federales officers throw Driver into a Mexican prison without record of his identity or the crime he committed. The prison that Driver is sent to is less of a jail and more of an underground city housing criminals and cast away citizens. While locked up, Driver finds himself at the mercy of warring organized crime factions, so he decides to lay low to observe the hierarchy of the prison system. Driver meets Kid, a nine year old boy, who’s mother is also an inmate. Kid becomes Driver’s confidant and right hand man. Driver takes an interest in Kid, first for self serving reasons, but eventually because he learns the real reason Kid and his mother are locked in the prison. The warden, a crime lord, is in need of a liver transplant. Kid’s blood type is a perfect match with the warden’s, so his liver will be removed and transplanted into the warden’s body. Driver uses information he learns about the warring crime factions to manipulate conflict and create dissension. Driver narrowly saves Kid from his liver being snatched from his body, causes the prison to be raided by the authorities and manages to escape with the bag of stolen money that he started out with.
