As a man of means, Austrian Count von Schönbrunn (Klaus Kinski) has an expensive hobby - hunting. However, Schönbrunn is not content with the average prey; he seeks to hunt the biggest game in the world - an elephant. With the help of his guides, Lobo (Yorgo Voyagis) and Hemingway (Harvey Keitel), Schönbrunn sets out on his quest to kill the majestic animal.

The trio embarks on a grueling journey through the Tanzanian wilderness, facing countless challenges and tribulations along the way. They encounter dangerous wildlife and treacherous terrain as they venture deeper into the African jungle. As the journey progresses, the relationships between the characters become increasingly strained.

Harvey Keitel's Hemingway is the voice of reason, trying to temper Schönbrunn's obsession with the hunt, while Yorgo Voyagis's Lobo is the experienced guide who knows how to survive in the wilderness. Kinski imbues Schönbrunn with an unrelenting determination to achieve his goal at any cost, no matter how much carnage it may cause.

The cinematography is stunning, capturing the vast and awe-inspiring landscapes of Africa. The film's score is also noteworthy, with composer Pino Donaggio's haunting and emotive score accentuating the tension and drama in scenes.

While Grandi cacciatori is ostensibly a film about hunting, it raises questions about the morality of such a pursuit, particularly when it involves killing endangered animals. The film does not glorify the hunt but rather depicts it as a brutal and bloody affair that exacts a heavy toll on both the hunters and their prey.

Ultimately, Grandi cacciatori is a tense, atmospheric adventure film that explores themes of obsession, mortality, and the human drive to conquer nature. The film is buoyed by strong performances from its lead actors and a visually striking setting.
