Harakiri or Madame Butterfly is a German silent movie by Fritz Lang. It was based on a short story of the same name by John Luther Long, which also inspired Puccini's opera. The movie also has the distinction of being one of the first movies to depict Japanese culture. It is set in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. In it, a Japanese woman falls in love with a Danish naval officer, and they get married. He eventually goes back to Europe, leaving the woman and her son behind.
