Metropolis is a science fiction film that takes place in a futuristic city. In this city, the wealthiest citizens live in tall buildings, far above the poorer class, who live and work in horrible and often dangerous conditions. The main character, Freder, is the son of the leader of the city. Freder spends his days doing as he pleases and never thinks of the people who work to make his life easy. This changes, though, when he meets Maria, a member of the working class. Freder feels an attraction to Maria and wants to see her again. As he attempts to find Maria, Freder ventures down into the lower parts of the city. There, he sees how horribly the people are treated, and how difficult life is for them. He befriends a young man named Georgy, and even takes Georgy’s place at a machine, experiencing the strain of the work for himself. Meanwhile, in the city above, plans involving Freder’s father threaten the security and safety of everyone living in the city. Freder and Maria must now attempt to reconcile the differences between the wealthy and the poor if the people are to continue to live in peace.
