Peter McGowan is a slick, chain-smoking L.A. playwright who suffers from horrible insomnia that has fueled his success with a string of hit after hit on Broadway for the better part of a decade. With a long list of woes and distractions, including a man who is claiming to be him, a wife who is begging him to have a child he doesn’t want, and a sudden case of impotence, not to mention the incessant barking of the dog next door who drives him to near to the point of madness almost every night, he struggles to work on his newest play even as a new neighbor moves in next door. The new woman’s 8-year-old daughter may be just the thing that Peter needs to stir his paternal feelings and work out the kinks in his dialog. She may even hold the answer to the noisy dog and the annoying doppelganger.
