I Dreamed of Africa is a romantic biopic that was written by Paula Milne and Susan Shilliday, based upon the book by Kuki Gallmann. The movie was directed by Hugh Hudson and features Kim Basinger, Vincent Perez, Garrett Strommen and Eva Marie Saint. The story follows an Italian couple who decide to relocate to the Kenyan highlands in 1972 after the wife is seriously injured in a car accident. Kuki (played by Kim Basinger) evaluates her rather lackluster life and married Paolo (played by Vincent Perez) since he has helped her to recuperate. She and he move near a Great Rift Valley ranch with her son, seven year old Emanuele (played by Liam Aiken). The family manages to free themselves from the former societal restrictions to try to live a meaningful life. Kuki and Paolo are fairly disconnected since he is often away for several days running as he hunts and fishes with friends. Meanwhile, Kuki is not that interested in the surroundings, engaging in activities such as pulling down a barn, winding up with a tractor that is stuck in the mud. Kuki has some conversations with local farm foremen and laborers and finally devotes much of her time to preserving the endangered landscape. Poachers regularly encroach upon the land, killing elephants and rhinos for ivory. Realizing that the area has a different rhythm, she makes many attempts to convince those who wish to invade it to leave it alone. Kuki’s mother visits from time to time (played by Eva Marie Saint) who desperately wants for her daughter to return to Italy. However, she is devoted to saving the land. A large and dangerous storm blows up the region, closing down a local windmill and destroys the roof on their ranch house. Kuki attempts to bring out the good from each tragedy she experiences in her life. She also becomes a conservationist and leads the landmark fight against poaching in the entire region.
