New Moon, the second in the Twilight series starts off with Bella starting her senior year in school. She is looking forward to her 18th birthday even though her friends have already started talking about it. Edward, the vampire she loves, and his family throw her a birthday party at their house. While she was unwrapping one of her presents, she gets a paper cut, causing Jasper, to be enticed by the smell of blood and causing him to try and attack her. She is thrown across the room hitting a mirror and injures herself causing her to have stitches. Realizing that Bella needs to be protected, Edward decides to tell Bella that he does not love her anymore and that are moving from Forks. After hearing this Bella becomes severely depressed and heartbroken. She sits at her windows for days until she decides to engage in several thrill-seeking adventures. Motorcycle riding was the thing she took up and began to see and hear Edward telling her to stop. Without Edward being around the bond with Jacob becomes stronger than ever; making it easier to deal with the lose of Edward. Bella finds out that Jacob and his friends are really werewolves. Jacob and the other werewolves protect Bella from Laurent and Victoria, who is seeking revenge for James, who was killed in Twilight. Edward now believes that Bella has killed herself, due to visions and miscommunication between him and Alice, and is heartbroken over it and then goes to Volterra. There resides the only vampire clan that can kill other vampires. Alice and Bella rush there to save Edward, arriving just in time to stop him from exposing himself to everyone. The clan lets him know that any human knowing that vampires exist, must be killed or turned into a vampire themselves. When they get back to Forks, Edward proclaims his love to Bella and tells her the only reason he left was to protect her. Edward then talks to his family and they are in agreement to turn Bella into a vampire. The treaty set up between the vampires and the werewolves state that if a human is bitten the treaty is over. So, the outcome to Bella and Edwards fate is up in question as to whether or not the treaty will stand or fall.
