About a Boy is a film that is part comedy and part drama. It stars Hugh Grant, Toni Collette, and Nicholas Hoult. Grant plays Will, a wealthy man living off residual checks from a hit song his father wrote many years ago. Will’s main goals in life are to avoid work and meet women to date. One day, he decides to attend a single parent’s workshop in the hopes of meeting a vulnerable woman to spend time with. He makes believe that he has his own two year old son whose mother has run off. At the group, Will meets Suzie and is instantly smitten with her. The couple attend a group picnic where they babysit Marcus, the son of one of Suzie’s friends. Marcus is a weird, lonely child and his homelife is difficult. Marcus’ mother is suicidal. Marcus thinks Will is cool and desperately wants to hang out with him. He finds out that Will has made up having a son and using this information to blackmail him. Will feels bad for Marcus and tries to make him over into being someone cool. Will then meets another young woman, Rachel. Marcus and Will decide to pretend that they are father and son so Rachel will be impressed. Rachel eventually discovers the truth and she is furious. She breaks up with Will. Marcus’ mother continues to have emotional problems. He decides to sing her favorite song at the school talent show. His fellow students boo him. Will sees this and decides to join Marcus on stage. The students find the duet funny and applaud. Marcus’ mother is also touched by song and she cries. Rachel finds out what Will has done and she decides to give him another chance. Everyone lives happily ever after.
