In darkness is based on the true story of Socha, a Catholic sewer worker who saved Jews during the Nazi Germany Genocide by bringing them down into the sewers that ran beneath Lvov, a small town in Poland. This movie starts out with disorientating flashes of scenes that were all too common place during the Holocaust. The disruptive beginning flashes of In Darkness provides the viewer with a sense of what life was like for the common Jew during the 1943 Nazi invasion of Poland.

In Darkness follows the lives of a small group of Jewish families that were forced to live in the Lvov sewers to avoid capture and ultimately death. It shows the desperation that each person had to preserve there life as they faced dangerous conditions and lived in a place that would be inconceivable under normal circumstances. Though this new home in the Lvov sewers was horrific, dirty and dangerous it was a chance at survival and the decision to take that chance would preserve this small group of Jews far beyond the end of the war.

In Darkness has a second story that is entangled with the original story of desperation by Jewish members that escaped the holocaust through the Lvov sewers. This second story is one of growth and tells how Socha slowly changed with each day that he spent in the depths of the Lvov sewer system surprising himself as well as others as he spent each day striving to protect the Jews that he had hidden beneath the city. Socha was a petty thief that was always on the look out for a way to make a few extra dollars, in fact it was a chance to make some extra cash that persuaded Socha to risk everything to save and hide Jews beneath the city.
