In The Bedroom is a crime drama starring Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek. The two play a married couple, Matt and Ruth Fowler, who reside in a beautiful coastal Maine town. Their son, Frank, comes home from college for a visit. Frank has also fallen in love with town resident Natalie, who is divorced with a couple of children. Natalie’s ex-husband is incredibly abusive, and he is not willing to leave Natalie alone. Frank’s relationship with Natalie makes his mother worry, but his father seems to see no problem with it. One night while Frank is over at Natalie’s, her ex-husband comes over and starts a fight. Her ex kills Frank. The ex-husband is then arrested but released on bail. Matt and Ruth are shocked, and their grief threatens to tear their marriage apart. Ruth becomes almost comatose and retreats into a shell. Matt tries to act strong. With the ex-husband out on bail, Matt and Ruth begin to realize that a guilty verdict is going to be hard to get. There were no witnesses to the crime, so the district attorney may charge the ex-husband with manslaughter as opposed to murder. Matt and Ruth are devastated that the murderer may walk free. They have a huge argument where each accuses the other of being a bad parent, and they place the blame for Frank’s murder on the other one. Matt says Ruth was too strict with their son, while she says he was too easy on him, always letting him get away with everything. One night, Matt sees the ex-husband walking through town, and he kidnaps him. He then takes him to the woods and kills him. He returns to his house and tells Ruth what he has done. Ruth’s only reaction is to go and make a pot of coffee and then get a band-aid for Matt’s finger.
