Watch Little Children
- 2 hr 10 min
In a middle class suburb of Boston, Sarah Pierce is married and has a daughter with the successful but unavailable Richard. Sarah feels disconnected from her daughter and her husband, who has a secret obsession with an adult entertainment star. At the neighborhood playground Sarah feels even more out of place among the suburban soccer moms and their gossiping clique. The other mothers are enthralled by stay-at-home Brad Adamson, a former college football player who is disillusioned with his life. He hates that his wife brings in their income while he has twice failed the bar exam. Brand wastes his time sitting at a park watching skateboarders and lamenting his lost youth. A friend, disgraced police officer Larry, suggests Brad join a touch football team with him. Bored Sarah and depressed Brad meet up at the park and have immediate chemistry. Sarah suggests they hug to shake up the watching clique mothers but Brad kisses her instead and the pair soon begin having an affair. Elsewhere in the neighborhood mentally deficient Ronnie McGorvey, a felon convicted of indecent exposure to a minor, is released into his mother's care. Larry rails against Ronnie, harassing him and vandalizing his mother's home. His hate campaign culminates in a near assault of Ronnie and his mother. At a football game, Brad asks Sarah to run away with him and they agree to meet up the next evening. Drunk after the game, Larry goes to the McGorvey house and wakes the entire neighborhood with a megaphone. When Ronnie's mother tries to stop him, Larry pushes her and she suffers a heart attack then dies at the hospital. Unable to care for himself and having lost the only person who mattered, Ronnie doesn't know how to carry on living. On his way to meet up with Sarah, Brad sees the skateboarders and takes them up on a dare to jump a short stair rail. Brad injures himself and goes to the hospital while Sarah, waiting in the park, encounters a sobbing Ronnie sitting on a swing. When she tries to comfort him her daughter runs off and, terrified at losing her, Sarah finds Lucy and takes her home, finally realizing what her priorities should be. In the park a guilty Larry comes to apologize to Ronnie only to find that he has castrated himself. Larry rushes Ronnie to the hospital right as Brad arrives to be met by his worried wife at the emergency room entrance.
