Carrie is a horror movie that was based on a book by Stephen King; it was the first King novel to be adapted for the big screen. Stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both nominated for Academy Awards for their eerie portrayals of daughter and mother, Margaret and Carrie White. Carrie is a shy and quiet high school student who has a horrible home life. She is the subject of repeated physical and emotional abuse from her mentally unstable mother. The pain doesn’t stop when Carrie goes to school, as she is the frequent target of bullying and verbal attacks from her classmates at school. One emotional attack comes as Carrie experienced her first menstrual cycle while showering after gym class. The girls in her gym class taunt and beat her until she is saved by her teacher. Something different about Carrie is disclosed, as her anger causes light bulbs to burst. As the movie continues, Carrie begins to show more and more signs of having emotional outbursts that are followed by acts of telekinesis that cause items to fly across the room. The teacher tells Margaret about Carrie’s issue in the shower; Margaret accuses Carrie of being evil. Carrie has a crush on a handsome classmate, Tommy. When she speaks out that she thought Tommy’s poetry reading was beautiful, she is insulted by the teacher. Tommy feels bad for Carrie, and his friends convince him to ask her to the prom. Carrie accepts the invitation, but Margaret refuses to let her go. This angers Carrie, and she uses her powers to burst all of the windows out of the house, and she goes to the prom with Tommy. The girls that bullied Carrie are reprimanded, and they rig the prom king and queen elections to allow Carrie to win. This was only to set up a prank that embarrasses Carrie. This puts her over the edge, and the end of the movie shows everyone how she takes revenge.
