A story of a group of friends who find themselves embroiled in a life of crime some of them wish to avoid, but have little choice in. Running at 100 minutes the movie was a critical and box office success mainly because of the popularity of the main actors of Omar Epps and rapper Tupac Shakur. The Juice referred to in the title of the movie is the thrill of committing a crime that the criminal finds it hard to forget and often repeats. Located in Harlem, New York The Juice tells the story of four close friends, The Wrecking Crew who slowly slide from causing a little trouble in their neighborhood into petty crime. At the outset of the movie the four characters spend their days trying to help their friend, Q begin his career as a DJ by stealing records and equipment for him instead of going to school. As they live their everyday lives the group have problems with harassment from their rivals in a Puerto Rican gang and from local police officers; the family lives of the boys is also shown to be difficult and fills their lives with tension and stress. Things take a turn for the worse when the group witness a robbery and one of their crew, Bishop played by Tupac Shakur, feels the thrill of the crime and wants to make some easy money through crime. The boys reluctantly plan a robbery with Bishop, which ends with Bishop producing a gun and shooting the store owner who is cooperating with the robbery to avoid any problems. Tensions in the group increase when Bishop shoots another member of The Wrecking Crew, Raheem; suddenly becoming scared as the police investigation draws closer to him Bishop begins to frame Omar Epps character of Q for the murders. Juice attempts to portray the reality of life in an urban environment for young African American males; the portrayal of gun crime in the movie was controversial at the time of release.
