Jules is a shy Austrian writer who befriends an outgoing Bohemian Frenchman named Jim. Together, they enjoy a life filled with art, each hoping to find the right woman and fall in love. One day they become enchanted with an ancient statue of a goddess, and soon after, they meet Catherine. She's a capricious free spirit who looks uncannily like the statue. An intense romantic triangle begins. Then war breaks out across Europe. Now each man must serve his country in the battle--on opposing sides. François Truffaut's classic dramatic film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché.
