It is the year 1900 in Norway when little Kamilla becomes an orphan. Packed off to live with her rich uncle in Kristiansand, Kamilla soon gets under the thumb of her uncle's wife. Kamilla fears being sent off to a boarding school in Denmark but is reprieved when instead she is sent to an aunt who lives in the countryside. Kamilla soon meets a colorful thief who asks for her moral support and teaches her lessons along the way.
